Hip pain
Groin, thigh or buttock pain when walking is often arthritis of the hip, but sometimes it comes from the lower back. An orthopaedic surgeon will examine you, do an X-ray the same day and explain what will help in your case.

Possible causes
These are the most common causes. Your doctor will name the actual cause after an examination and scans; it can't be pinned down from a description online.
Avascular necrosis of the femoral head
Pain builds over months, even in younger people; it's important to catch early.
Trochanteric bursitis
Pain on the outer side of the hip, painful to lie on that side.
Hip fracture
In older people after a fall, even a minor one: you can't stand on the leg and the foot turns outward.
Pain referred from the lower back
Pain in the buttock and back of the thigh, sometimes below the knee.

- pain on walking has lasted over a month
- it's hard to put on socks or shoes, or get into a car
- you've started to limp
- painkillers are helping less and less
What you can do before your visit
- If walking hurts, use a stick in the hand on the opposite side.
- Reduce weight and stair climbing; swimming and an exercise bike help.
- If an older person has fallen, don't try to 'walk it off'; call a doctor.
Take painkillers only as the leaflet says and if they're safe for you. Don't heat a fresh injury, and don't have joint injections without a doctor's examination.

Is my hip pain from the joint or my back?
