Questions

How many days will I stay in hospital after joint replacement?

About 5 days on average, including monitoring in intensive care straight after surgery. We discharge patients when they are ready, not by the calendar: walking confidently with a walker or crutches, managing 2–3 stairs, the wound healing well and pain controlled with tablets. These are the criteria of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). Length of stay varies widely worldwide: the median is about 3 days in England and up to 10 days is common in Germany. We chose a stay long enough for patients to complete their first physiotherapy sessions under medical supervision and go home with confidence. A systematic review showed that early mobilisation shortens hospital stay, so we help you get up as early as is safe. After arthroscopy and minor procedures discharge is usually sooner; your doctor will give you the exact plan.

Can I visit a patient in their room?

No, visitors do not enter the wards — patients meet their families in the hall on the ground floor. This protects patients from infection: after surgery, and especially after joint replacement, infection is one of the most serious complications and is hard to treat. Every visitor brings in microbes from outside, so only staff enter the ward area.

When can I walk after joint replacement?

Usually the day after surgery, with a walker and under the supervision of a physiotherapist. Early mobilisation lowers the risk of complications and speeds recovery. Most people need a cane for a few weeks and return to normal activity within 6–12 weeks.

What should I bring to hospital?

Your passport, test results and scans, a list of medicines you take, comfortable closed shoes with non-slip soles, loose clothing, toiletries and a phone charger. If you need a walker or crutches, we will fit them at the clinic.

How do I find out the exact cost of treatment?

Prices on the website are a guide. Your doctor will give you the exact cost after the examination and scans: it depends on the procedure, the implant chosen and the length of stay. Everything is agreed with you in advance, before treatment begins.
