Possible causes
These are the most common causes. Your doctor will name the actual cause after an examination and scans; it can't be pinned down from a description online.
Hallux valgus (bunion)
The big toe drifts over and a painful bump grows at its base.
Flat feet
Feet tire quickly, the arches ache and swell by evening.
Achilles tendon problems
Pain and thickening above the heel, especially in runners.
Ankle instability
The ankle keeps rolling after an old sprain.
Diabetic foot
With diabetes: sores that heal poorly, numbness, changes in foot shape.

- you have diabetes — your feet should be checked regularly
What you can do before your visit
- Wear comfortable shoes with a 2–3 cm heel and a soft sole.
- Stretch your calves and soles several times a day; it helps heel pain.
- If you have diabetes, check your feet every day.
Take painkillers only as the leaflet says and if they're safe for you. Don't heat a fresh injury, and don't have joint injections without a doctor's examination.

Common questions
Can a bunion be fixed without surgery?
Pain can be reduced without surgery with the right shoes, inserts and exercises, but only surgery can correct the deformity. Our foot surgeons perform minimally invasive operations through small punctures.
Is a heel spur permanent?
Plantar fasciitis pain usually settles within a few months with stretching, good shoes and insoles. The 'spur' seen on an X-ray is often not the actual cause of the pain.
