Neck pain
Neck pain is often muscle tension from long hours at a computer or phone and goes away on its own. If the pain spreads to your arm, your fingers go numb or you feel dizzy, see a spine specialist.

Possible causes
These are the most common causes. Your doctor will name the actual cause after an examination and scans; it can't be pinned down from a description online.
Cervical disc herniation
Pain spreads to the shoulder and arm, with numbness or weakness in the fingers.
Age-related wear of the neck
Stiffness, crunching and a dull ache, worse in the morning.
After an injury
For example after sudden braking in a car or a fall.

- the pain lasts longer than 2–3 weeks
- the pain spreads to the shoulder or arm
- your fingers are numb
- it's hard to turn your head
What you can do before your visit
- Take a break every 30–40 minutes at the computer and raise the screen to eye level.
- Move your neck gently within a pain-free range rather than keeping it still.
- Don't let anyone crack or manipulate your neck before a doctor has examined you.
Take painkillers only as the leaflet says and if they're safe for you. Don't heat a fresh injury, and don't have joint injections without a doctor's examination.
