Leg pain: which doctor to see

Possible causes
These are the most common causes. Your doctor will name the actual cause after an examination and scans; it can't be pinned down from a description online.
Joint problems
Pain in the knee, hip or ankle with movement and weight-bearing.
Varicose veins
Heaviness and swelling by evening, visible enlarged veins.
Narrowed arteries
Calves ache when walking and ease after a short rest; more common in smokers and people with diabetes.
Muscle strains and cramps
After sport or a sudden sprint, usually in the calf or hamstring.

- the pain hasn't gone in 2–3 weeks
What you can do before your visit
- If your calf hurts and the leg is swollen, don't massage it before you've been examined.
- With pain from the back, stay gently active and avoid lifting.
- Note when it hurts: walking, at night, after sitting. It helps the doctor.
Take painkillers only as the leaflet says and if they're safe for you. Don't heat a fresh injury, and don't have joint injections without a doctor's examination.

What is a Doppler scan, and does it hurt?
It's an ultrasound of the blood vessels that shows how blood flows through the leg veins and arteries. It's painless and takes about half an hour.
